When You Need Roof Insulation (Not Attic Insulation
If your home has an open attic, the cheapest fix is usually attic insulation on the attic floor. Roof insulation is for spaces with no attic: vaulted and cathedral ceilings, bonus rooms under the roof, flat roofs and homes being converted to an unvented (‘hot’) roof.

What is the difference between roof insulation and attic insulation?
Attic insulation sits on the attic floor above your ceiling, with a ventilated attic above it. Roof insulation is installed in the roof itself, between or above the rafters, and is used where there is no attic: vaulted and cathedral ceilings, flat roofs, lofts and unvented roof assemblies. Attic insulation is usually cheaper when you have an attic.
Can you insulate a cathedral or vaulted ceiling?
Yes. If the rafters are deep enough, we use batts with vent baffles to keep an air gap under the roof deck. If they are shallow, closed-cell spray foam or rigid foam gives more R-value per inch and air-seals at the same time. Spray foam must then be covered with an approved thermal barrier such as drywall.
What R-value should a cathedral ceiling have?
Aim for about R-28 to R-40 in cathedral ceilings, depending on rafter depth and the material used; new construction must meet the BC Building Code and your municipality’s Step Code level. Attics with room for loose fill should reach about R-50. We recommend a target after seeing your roof construction.
Does roof insulation qualify for BC rebates?
Yes, when an HPCN contractor installs it. BC Hydro and FortisBC treat flat and cathedral ceilings like attics: $0.02 × R-value added × square feet, with at least R-12 added, up to $900. Other eligible areas earn $0.07 × R × sq ft, with at least R-20 added, up to $1,000.
How long does roof insulation take?
Most vaulted-ceiling or roof-deck insulation jobs take one to two days. Spray foam needs a curing and ventilation period before the thermal barrier goes on, and flat-roof work is scheduled with your roofer, so total project time depends on the other trades involved.
