BC homeowners can claim up to $5,500 in insulation rebates through the Home Renovation Rebate program run by BC Hydro, FortisBC and CleanBC Better Homes, plus bonuses of up to $2,000 when you complete more than one upgrade. The work must be done by a Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN) member, and the rebate is based on the R-value you add. How much does insulation cost in the Lower Mainland?
Most attic top-ups cost about $1.50 to $2.45 per square foot installed, so a 1,000 sq ft attic is roughly $1,500 to $2,450 before rebates. Spray foam runs higher, about $3 to $5 per square foot. Your exact price depends on access, the R-value you add and whether old insulation must come out.
How much is the BC Hydro insulation rebate?
The attic rebate is $0.02 × the R-value added × the square footage, up to $900. Basement, crawlspace and exterior wall insulation pay $0.09 × R × sq ft, up to $1,200 each. Combined insulation rebates can reach $5,500, plus bonuses of up to $2,000 for completing more than one upgrade.
How long does attic insulation take to install?
Most attic insulation jobs in a single-family home take one day, including baffles, air sealing around the hatch and clean-up. Larger homes, removals of old or contaminated insulation, and crawlspace or spray foam work can take two days. You can usually stay home while we work.
How do I know if my home needs more insulation?
Common signs are rooms that are colder than the rest of the house, drafts near walls and outlets, rising heating bills, frost or ice dams in winter, and attic insulation that looks thin, flattened or level with the joists. Many older Lower Mainland homes have far less than the R-50 now recommended for attics. A free assessment confirms what you have.
Do you remove old insulation?
Yes. We remove insulation that is wet, compressed, mouldy or contaminated by rodents, then air seal and reinsulate. If your attic has vermiculite (grey-brown, pebble-like loose fill), it must be tested for asbestos first, and in BC any asbestos removal must be done by a WorkSafeBC-licensed abatement contractor.
