What is the difference between fiberglass and mineral wool batts?
Fibreglass batts are spun glass fibres; they are the most affordable and work well in walls, floors and ceilings. Mineral wool batts are made from stone or slag; they are denser, more fire-resistant and better for sound, but cost more. Both are non-combustible and keep their R-value if installed without gaps or compression.
What R-value batts do I need for exterior walls?
Most 2×6 exterior walls in the Lower Mainland get R-20 to R-24 batts, and older 2×4 walls usually take R-12 to R-14. New construction and major renovations must meet the BC Building Code and any Energy Step Code level your municipality requires, so confirm the target with your designer or building department.
Can batt insulation be installed in finished walls?
Not without opening the wall. Batts need open framing, so they are best during renovations, additions and new builds. For walls that are already closed, blown-in insulation through small holes is the usual option. Attics are also better done with blown-in insulation.
Do batts qualify for BC Hydro rebates?
Yes, when an HPCN contractor installs them in eligible areas. Exterior wall cavities and basement or crawlspace walls earn $0.09 × R-value × sq ft, up to $1,200 each, and other areas such as floors over unheated spaces earn $0.07 × R × sq ft, up to $1,000. Interior soundproofing is not rebated.
How long does batt insulation installation take?
Most rooms or additions take a day or less; a full house of open walls usually takes one to two days depending on size and access. We coordinate with your contractor so the insulation is done before the inspection and drywall.
